A BRAVE tenant saved a couple from death after their rented room caught fire.
Manazo Motebele (43) and her boyfriend Tshediso Mgxekwa (45) were sitting in their rented room in Batho, Mangaung, on Saturday when a fire broke out.
The man who rescued the couple told Daily Sun: “I was supposed to go to Tshwane, but for some strange reason my colleagues left me behind and I stayed in my room.
“Suddenly, I saw a fire and heard the couple screaming for help, so I ran to their room.
“I kicked their door open and went through the thick cloud of smoke.
“I pulled out the woman, whose upper body was on fire, when I heard her boyfriend screaming for help.
“I looked for him and pulled him out of the shack.
“I don’t regard myself as a hero. I did what anyone else would have done.”
Manazo’s daughter Nontozanele Motebele (21) said: “I don’t know what happened before the fire broke out, but I know my mum and her boyfriend argued a lot.
“I was at my aunt’s place when the fire started.
“I am thankful to the tenant who pulled my mum and her boyfriend out of the burning room.
“My mum was burnt on her stomach and hands and lost everything in the fire.”
When the SunTeam and the hero arrived at Pelonomi Hospital on Saturday night to visit the couple, nurses said the doctors were still attending to them.
They would only be able to see visitors the following day.
Tshediso’s sister Keitumetse Mgxekwa (55) thanked the man for saving her brother’s life.
Police spokeswoman Sergeant Ikobeng Hlubi confirmed the incident.
She said cops were investigating the cause of the fire.
