A MEMBER of Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa's protection unit was injured in a crash at a Cape Town intersection, police said today.

"A lead vehicle of the deputy president's was hit by a bakkie which allegedly drove through a red robot [yesterday afternoon]," spokesperson for acting police commissioner, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said. "It was at an intersection where you normally have the lead car blocking off the traffic for the flow and then this bakkie... hit it." He said the bodyguard was taken to hospital and a case of negligent and reckless driving was being investigated.

Two British tourist said yesterday that a black sedan bearing a gold government seal saying "Presidential Protection Service" had allegedly driven through a red robot and crashed into their car.

One of the tourists, who did not want to give her name, said they had been driving over the Blaauwberg Road and the R27 intersection on the West Coast when they were hit.

She believed the traffic light had been green for them. Still in shock, the woman said they were not injured and declined to speak further.

The right front-side of their rental car and a door were damaged in the crash.

Four people were standing around the black sedan, one in brown camouflage, and another wearing a white cap with the words "Presidential Golf Day" embroidered in black. A white car was parked behind their vehicle.

Mulaudzi on Saturday said the the protection unit were just doing their job.
