SINAH Mhlongo walks the streets ekasi with a cellphone in one hand and a Bible in the other.
This is because the 35-year-old mum is praying for her son’s life while waiting for a call to inform her whether he is dead or alive. Sinah’s 15-year-old son, Mpho, is in the ICU at Kalafong Hospital in Atteridgeville, Tshwane, after he sustained severe injuries during a fight at school last Thursday.
Speaking to the SunTeam outside her home in Eersterus yesterday, Sinah said she had returned home from work and found her son lying on his bed, unconscious.
“I tried to talk to him, but he did not move.
“His younger brother said he came home from school early with a headache.
“Mpho’s best friend told me there was a fight on the soccer pitch, during which another pupil hit him on the head.”
She said Mpho lost his balance, fell onto a steel pole and fractured his skull.
“Four operations were performed, but his condition did not improve.”
She said nurses and doctors told her to prepare for the worst.
Gauteng education spokesman Steve Mabona said Mpho was suspended last Tuesday for stabbing another pupil with a pen.
“His disciplinary meeting was scheduled for Wednesday. He was unfortunately not supposed to be at school on the day of the incident,” he said.
He wished him a speedy recovery and said they would send a team to support the family.
Police spokesman Sergeant Sam Shibambo said a case of assault was opened.“We are still investigating and no one has been arrested.”
