A NINE-YEAR-OLD orphan is fighting for her life in hospital after allegedly trying to commit suicide with an overdose of tablets!

It has been alleged that a man had been raping the child from Zwide, in Port Elizabeth, who cannot be named.

Her aunt (25) said: “Last Sunday morning she told me my sister’s boyfriend had been raping her. I took her to the hospital, where it was confirmed.

“We opened a case at KwaZakhele Police Station and he was arrested, but on Monday he was released. When I went to the cop shop they took him into custody again.”

On Tuesday morning he was freed again.

“Later, my niece told me this man threatened to kill her if she continued to accuse him of rape,” said the aunt.

“I told the cops about these threats and they said they did not understand why he had been released.

“After we came back from the police we found her lying on the floor with an empty container of pills she got from the hospital, and an empty bottle of shampoo.

“We rushed her to Dora Nginza Hospital. She is in the ICU, but doctors say her chances of survival are slim.

“When I came back from the hospital my sister admitted she had seen her boyfriend raping our niece. On Wednesday she ran away with the boyfriend. They both deserve to rot in jail.”

Captain Andre Beetge said the child protection unit was investigating a rape case.

Beetge said an arrest would be made after all the evidence had been gathered.
