OFFICIAL CAUGHT IN THE ACT
Ekangala residents claim the City of Tshwane is ignoring water leaks in the kasi, yet water department employees abuse resources.  ~

RESIDENTS of Ekangala, east of Tshwane, have been waiting for weeks to have their leaking water pipes fixed.

They said despite reporting the matter to the City of Tshwane, they have not received any help.

So when a bakkie belonging to the City’s water department drove into their kasi last Tuesday, they thought their problems had come to an end.

Little did they know a municipal employee was using the vehicle to run errands.

Residents said they saw the man park the vehicle at a local
supermarket.

Minutes later, he began loading bags of flour into the bakkie.

One of the residents, Busi Mahlangu (28), said: “We have to pay more money for the leaking water while the City’s employees are
using state resources for personal errands.”

Another resident, Mandla Masango (34), said it was not the first time they had seen state resources being misused.

“Because we didn’t have proof before, it was hard for us to report the matter.

“We are thankful for our smartphones because we can now film them while they are doing the deed,” he said.

Acting Tshwane spokesman Lindela Mashigo said a fleet policy was in place to govern the use of vehicles.

He said: “Action should be taken by the supervisor, in the event of misuse of our vehicles.

“We will alert the relevant unit to investigate so action can be taken against the driver.”
