A NEWLY MARRIED man was arrested for murder on Sunday after allegedly shooting a 17-year-old girl while trying to protect her from her abusive boyfriend!

The family of Cebi Mthiyane from Mfekayi Village in Mtubatuba, northern KZN, told Daily Sun they believe the bullet that killed Cebi Mthiyane was actually meant for her boyfriend.

Nomshado Mkhwanazi, Cebi’s aunt, said: “I was called at about 4am on Sunday. We all live close to each other, including the groom. When I arrived at the scene I was told the groom was trying to protect Cebi from her boyfriend, who was beating her up,” she said.

“When he intervened, Cebi’s boyfriend reached for his pocket and the newlywed thought the boyfriend was trying to take out a gun. He then shot at the boyfriend, but he missed him.”

She said three bullets were fired and the last one tragically hit Cebi, who leaves behind a five-month-old baby.

The suspect’s son was apparently in his room with Cebi when a man believed to be her lover came and demanded to see her.

KZN police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane said: “Cebi was shot and killed by a 45-year-old man. She sustained a gunshot wound to the head and died instantly. The motive is unknown.”

The suspect appeared in KwaMsane Magistrates Court on Monday and the case was postponed to 29 October for a bail application.
