AS PART of the tradition of ubuntu, neighbours console families that have lost loved ones.
But a 64-year-old madala from Bergville, in KZN who did not want to be named, says he has become an outcast since the death of his 63-year-old wife.
The man said neighbours have been keeping their distance because his wife was accused of being a witch 10 years ago.
“My wife was shot dead by two unknown gunmen on Friday at my home. I screamed for help, but no one came.
“Nobody has come to comfort my family and the only people I have seen here are cops and the councillor,” said the madala.
“Neighbours mock us when they pass my homestead, saying my wife was a witch and deserved what happened.
“We believe her death had something to do with an incident that happened 10 years ago.
“A woman in the neighbourhood died after a short illness and her family accused my wife of bewitching her.”
He said five years ago, an unknown gunman came into his house and attempted to shoot his wife, but failed.
“As time progressed, the situation calmed down and we got on with our neighbours. This sudden isolation has shocked me,” he said.
A resident said: “While some still believe the witchcraft allegations, others fear they might get hurt if the gunmen return to finish off the family.”
KZN police spokeswoman Captain Nqobile Gwala said a case of murder was opened, but no arrests had been made.
