SOME sangomas travel far and wide, even up to Malawi, to get their hands on rare muthi plants.
But sangoma Rombu Majola (71) gets all his plants locally with the help of his six dogs.
He says his dogs are guided by the ancestors!
“I always get rare plants that other sangomas battle to find.”
He said the ancestors don’t tell him exactly where to dig for the plants, but they use his dogs to show him the right place.
“Without fail, when my dogs indicate a particular spot and I dig there, I find what I have been looking for,” he said.
Wherever sangoma Rombu goes, his six dogs are always with him.
“I look after them because they look after me.
“My ancestors send messages through them,” he said.
Rombu, who lives in Knights squatter camp in Germiston, Ekurhuleni, said it would be difficult for him to find his rare muthi plants without his ancestors guiding the dogs.
He showed the SunTeam muthi named madunge’s gageni, which he crushes to mix with other muthi.
“This muthi helps women who cannot give birth, the mentally ill and people with chronic diseases,” he said.
“Ancestors are spiritual beings but they will not come to you as a spirit.
“They use other things to reveal themselves to you,” he said.
Rombu’s dogs are well looked after.
He has a bag in which he carries food for them as he walks through the bush with them.
