PASTORS and residents of Thabo Mbeki squatter camp in Cape Town gathered to pray for pupils writing their final exams.

Mila Mpayipheli, who organised the prayer session, said she decided to host the event because some kids used muthi when it was time to write their final exams.

She said: “We want to pray for the kids who don’t use muthi and hope those who do will stop because it affects other pupils.

“We know our kids will be protected from those who bring bad things into the exam rooms because we trust God and know He will help them.”

During the event, NGO Lerato’s Hope donated stationery and sanitary pads to girls so they didn’t have to miss exams because of their periods.

Parent Thingaza Vesele said she was grateful for the prayer session. Some kids suffered from headaches because of the muthi used during exam time.

“Our kids needed these prayers. If it was up to me, the sessions would be held every day until the end of exams,” said Thingaza.

She urged all pupils to put their trust in God instead of muthi.

“Nothing beats prayer.”

Grade 12 pupil Namhla Makhangele (18), from Phandulwazi High School, said: “Prayers alone won’t make us pass. Pupils need to play their part by making sure we study hard.”

One of the pastors said this was the busiest time of year for men of God because they had to pray for pupils who fell ill as a result of their peers’ use of muthi.

He said: “To all those who are depending on muthi, what you are doing is wrong. Just study and pray and everything will fall into place. I can assure you that you don’t need to rely on muthi.”
