NKATEKO Lubisi was horrified when his mum died in June and he found out she was married to someone he had never met!

He said when his mum, who the family had always known as Sophie Sambo, died everyone was shocked to discover she was officially married to a man called Ahmed Shamshair and had his surname.

Nkateko, from Delmore in Ekurhuleni, told Daily Sun: “After my mum died, we were shocked by her death certificate, which said she had married this man in 2004.

“My mum has never been married to a man by that name. In fact, she was never officially married at all.

“My father paid lobola for her but they were never married.”

He said they had no access to their inheritance as she was married in community of property.

Nkateko said when the family went to Home Affairs, it was confirmed that their mum had died as Sophie Shamshair.

“We were told to go to court and request a divorce but when we went there, we were told to track down this Ahmed Shamshair. But we don’t know how to find him.”

Home Affairs spokesman Thabo Makgola said: “As the department, we are willing to help but we need to do a proper investigation first. Based on the outcomes of the investigation, we will see what assistance we can provide.”
