YOU might want to go to Tokiso Street, but you could find yourself in Tikiso or even Tukiso Street.
What if you were looking for Mohokare Street and you found yourself in Mohokarl, or you are directed to Pelindaba when you want Phelindaba?
Max Modise, a resident of Diepkloof, Soweto, said there are many streets in the area that have been spelled wrong.
“There are many cases where the same street name is spelled in two or three different ways,” he said.
“We have been living with this confusion since 2008, when people who cannot spell were awarded the tenders.
“At first we did not notice it was wrong, but then visitors kept complaining about getting lost,” said Max.
Monalisa Raborifi (42) said the name of her street is written Tikiso on the sign and Tukiso on the ground, and both the names are wrong!
“It is a Sesotho name and it is Tokiso,” she said.
“I live at a corner and both streets are spelt incorrectly.”
She said Mohokarl Street is supposed to be Mohokare Street.
Another street near her house is spelled Pelindaba instead of Phelindaba.
Max said they have been reporting the problem to their ward councillor but nothing has been done.
“We have been telling politicians to fix and name the streets correctly, but nothing has happened,” said Max.
Resident Peter Sehlako said they have started calling the streets Confused Street to show how little the municipality cares about kasi people.
“We raise mistakes like this in meetings and the municipality tells us they will fix it, but that is where it ends. It’s been like this for years,” said Peter.
Joburg Roads Agency spokeswoman Bertha Scheepers said the department will send a team to the area.
“We will rectify the mistakes within seven days.”
