More than 100 school children were involved in two separate bus accidents in two provinces yesterday, paramedics said.

A group of about 50 children aged between 15 and 18 sustained minor to moderate injuries when their bus overturned on the R603 in Umbumbulu near Durban, and rolled down an embankment, ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said.

Most of the children had already climbed out of the vehicle and had made their way up to the road by the time paramedics arrived. They were treated on the scene and taken to nearby hospitals.

The cause of the collision was not immediately clear. The driver was among the injured.

In a separate accident in Potchefstroom, North West, a bus driver lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a sign board. The bus was carrying about 60 primary school children, Meiring said.

According to paramedics at the scene, the driver alleged that his brakes failed. Neither he nor the children sustained any injuries.
