A minibus driver was left in a coma after an angry mob assaulted him for allegedly running over a four-year-old girl, killing her.
The incident happened on Thursday evening on the corner of Madiba and Mahlakaneng streets in Madiba Park, Polokwane.
Netcare 911, who responded to reports of a serious collision, were forced to call for backup from police when they arrived at the scene and found the 34-year-old being assaulted and stoned by the crowd. Nick Dollman of Netcare911 told News24 that paramedics had to be cautious as the crowd was hostile and enraged. This also made it difficult for paramedics to ascertain any further information as to what had happened.
“It was only once the crowd started dispersing with the arrival of more paramedics and police, that they were able to help the minibus driver,” said Dollman. He said the child’s body was found lying on the road close to the taxi. She had sustained fatal injuries while the man was in a critical condition and had sustained a severe head injury. Dollman said the man was placed on a ventilator and taken to a local hospital by an ambulance.
“The man is critical and in a coma. He sustained severe injuries from the bricks and stones that were thrown at him. He is still on a ventilator.”Ngoepe said a culpable homicide case had been opened.
