EIGHT employees of the Joburg Theatre are set to feel the wrath of Joburg’s mayor when they face disciplinary action.
This is after an investigation that uncovered their involvement in fraudulent activity and misconduct.
According to the statement from Mayor Herman Mashaba’s office, Nexus Forensic Services found evidence showing that six asylum permits held by the implicated employees were fraudulent, while two other permits were said to have expired in June 2016.
A case of fraud has been opened with the SAPS. The arrests of those implicated is expected soon.
The contents of the report include an investigation into the validity of asylum permits, as well as the special work permits held by various foreigners employed in the catering and hospitality sections of the theatre.
Mashaba said: “Funds lost by the city through corruption will be reclaimed for the benefit of our people.” He added: “I have also written to the Minister of Home Affairs, Malusi Gigaba, notifying him of the contents of the report.
“I’ve requested his department to take steps to detect and prevent criminal activity associated with illegally acquired immigration documents.”
Gabu Tugwana, the City of Joburg’s spokesman, said the investigation is part of the ongoing task undertaken by the mayor to crack down on fraud, corruption and nepotism.
