THE provincial education department of Mpumalanga has established a trauma and counselling service for matric pupils who are writing their final exams.

The MEC for education, Reginah Mhaule, said the service will help pupils who experience stress or exam-related disorders.

“We would like to urge all pupils who experience stress or related disorders to contact the department’s toll-free line on 0800 203 116,” said Mhaule.

“They will be linked with a specialist who will gladly assist them with their challenges.”

Mhaule said the eagerness of pupils to succeed during exams might come with pressures that could result in psychological challenges.

“These can also cause depression, which may in turn trigger suicidal thoughts,” she said.

“Depression is a feeling of sadness.

“It comes as a major risk factor for suicide because it is a deep feeling of hopelessness.”

Mhaule said pupils should know that when they were facing hardship and disappointment it takes strength and sheer determination to rise above the odds.

The results of this year’s matric exams are scheduled to be announced on 6 January next year. – AENS
