EVERYONE inside KwaMashu Shopping Centre thought a robbery was under way when a car crashed through the bank’s glass door on Monday.
It turns out that was not the case.
The driver of the white Volkswagen Golf had parked the car in front of the Nedbank branch in northern KZN.
When it was time for him to leave, instead of reversing he drove forward, crashing into the bank with a loud bang.
The noise, which sounded like a gunshot, sent everyone ducking for cover.
A worker from one of the shops nearby said they thought thugs had come to rob the bank.
“I was cleaning when I heard the sound.
“I immediately stopped everything I was doing and ducked for cover. Customers in surrounding stores did the same,” she said.
She said they were scared because there had been a robbery at the centre not so long before.
“Thugs often try their luck here. We are always on high alert because we don’t know when they will strike again,” she said.
The worker said a cash-in-transit guard was recently robbed of the cash he was carrying, as well as his firearm, at one of the stores in the centre.
“I heard he was approached by two gunmen who threatened him and robbed him of the boxes of money he had.”
KZN police spokeswoman Captain Nqobile Gwala said: “No case was opened and no injuries were reported.”
