A 21-year-old man attending an end-of-year outing drowned at Lamberts Bay's main beach in the Western Cape on Friday morning.
National Sea Rescue Institute Lamberts Bay station commander Mattyhs Koch said they responded to reports of a drowning at around 11:30.
When they arrived, the man from a farm in Citrusdal, had already died.
He was found on the beach after his friends removed him from the surf.
At the time, he had been attending an end-of-year function with friends and colleagues.
"The body of the man has been taken into the care of the forensic pathology services and police have opened an inquest docket," Koch said.
"The NSRI, police and the Department of Health's forensic pathology services convey sincere condolences to family and friends."
