LIVING in an area where water is scarce has taught Moramang ways to save water.
As an experienced builder, Moramang Sehlabaka of section F in Botshabelo, Free State has always dreamed of having a beautiful fence around his home.
But because he is unemployed, he could not afford expensive building materials.
What bothered him even more was that his wife sometimes didn’t have water to wash their clothes.
So being a good builder, he came up with the idea of collecting cool drink bottles to store water.
He used his creative skills, without spending any money, to save water at the same time as building an eye-catching fence.
He started collecting empty bottles from dumps. After gathering enough to build the first part of his wall, he washed them before filling them with water.
People thought maybe he had gone crazy when he filled used bottles with water.
“Although I tried to explain my plan to people, they failed to understand and said they’d wait to see if it worked,” he said.
He worked hard to finish the fence. His bottles were just as good as bricks!
Proud Moramang told the People’s Paper the fence is solid even though he did not use cement to hold the plastic bottles together.
“The weight of the water in the bottles keeps the fence stable. Even a strong wind or storm will not be able to destroy it,” he said.
