LINDANI Radebe is afraid that he might end up doing bad things if he has nothing to do with the free time on his hands.
The 19-year-old from KwaMpumuza, Pietermaritzburg completed matric last year and wanted to study hospitality studies at tertiary level.
At the beginning of this year he went to register for the course at the University of KZN but he wasn’t accepted because he doesn’t have an ID.
Lindani says his life is stuck as he can’t study or apply for a job.
“Life without an ID is meaningless.
“I don’t know why Home Affairs doesn’t give me an ID.
“I went to their office in September last year with my mother’s ID but they told me I don’t appear on their system as her son.
“I went back the next day with my gogo’s ID but an official told me I’m not linked to her either.
“I was told to apply for an unabridged birth certificate and to come back after another three months.
“I did that but was then told to wait for another period.
“I don’t know why my birth certificate was not ready.
“I wrote my matric exam after showing the school a letter from Home Affairs stating I had applied for a birth certificate,” said Lindani.
He wants to study next year but is now stressed because of the delay at Home Affairs.
“They should have given me my unabridged birth certificate so that I can apply for an ID.
“Then I’d be able to live a normal life as a student and make my dreams come true.”
KZN Home Affairs manager Cyril Mncwabe said officials have managed to get hold of Lindani and they are working on his application.
“The matter will be investigated by my office and further progress will be communicated to Daily Sun,” said Mncwabe.
