Killer snack samples taken for tests

VOORTREKKER Hospital CEO Dr Malubete Ralete visited the families of dead victims and survivors who fell sick after apparently eating poisoned snacks last Friday.

Two of the six kids died in hospital on Saturday, while the others are still fighting for their life at Mankweng and Polokwane hospitals.

The six kids reportedly ate snacks they allegedly picked up from the street.

The incident has left a community in Extension 19, Sekgakgapeng Village, outside Mokopane, shocked.

During his visit on Monday afternoon, Ralete was accompanied by Mogalakwena’s mayor, Andrina Matsemela, and councillor Salome Matlala as well as other municipal and health officials.

“Together with the police, we will do our utmost to investigate the circumstances that led to this tragedy,” said Ralete.

“We will assist the families with free transport to visit their children in hospitals. On top of this, we will arrange that they meet with psychologists and social workers.”

Mayor Matsemela told the families: “You are not alone in this difficult time. We have to accept that it was their time to go.

“Those who survived will help with the investigation.”

Limpopo health department spokesman Derrick Kganyago said samples taken from the victims had been sent to a Pretoria lab to determine the exact type of poison.
