THERE was a loud bang as a car collided with a brewery truck on Gilead Road in Moletjie outside Polokwane on Wednesday.
And while emergency services scrambled to help the injured, locals jumped in too – to help themselves to the booze.
A four-year-old girl died and two adults were seriously injured and taken to WF Knobel Hospital.
Boozer Sammy Mathiba said it was his month-end bonus.
“The beer I managed to collect will help my budget as I won’t spend too much on boozing,” said Sammy.
Another looter said: “I’m disappointed because many bottles were damaged. I wish this would also happen during the festive season.”
The traffic department’s Lazarus Nsiki said the smash happened after the car tried to overtake on a barrier line and collided with an oncoming truck.
“This is one of the most shocking accidents we have so far experienced this year.”
He urged road users to obey the signs and not to overtake where it’s not allowed or unnecessary.
Lieutenant-Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said no one was bust but investigations are under way.
“We urge road users not to drive recklessly. Those who ignore road rules will end up in jail,” he said.
