HEALTH Minister, Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi briefed the media this morning on the medical students that claimed were not placed for internships.
Motsoaledi said he has no sympathy for students who say they didn't know they needed to apply for jobs after studying.
He further said, "Interns declined placements in certain options and then claim then can't get jobs."
According to the minister, over 118 South African medical students that were waiting for internship placements have been placed and will receive letters next week.
A disappointed Motsoaledi says out of the 70 vacant posts for doctors advertised in the Eastern Cape, not even a single South African citizen applied for those posts.
Motsoaledi explained that doctors are given an opportunity to decide on five areas they would like to work in.
Following that the department decides based on the list of options, depending on availability of spaces.
On the matter of National Health Insurance(NHI) which is a health financing system that uses shared funds to provide access to quality health care services to all South Africans.
He said all the beneficiaries on the insurance will be based on their health needs and regardless of their socio-economic status.
