IT WAS supposed to be one of the happiest days of his life.
It was Karabelo Motshabi’s last day in prison after serving five years for armed robbery.
He had big plans for his new life, and shared his vision with his two friends inside Odi Prison in Mabopane, Tshwane.
But they had other plans for him – and he never saw another day outside prison after they stabbed him to death with a spoon and a pair of scissors!
The incident that happened on Thursday afternoon at about 4pm shattered his family’s hopes of seeing their son and brother.
Karabelo (38) graduated in prison as a fashion designer and planned to have his own clothing studio.
His devastated brother, Thabo (40), said Karabelo called him that day at 10am asking for airtime.
“I was a bit busy at work so I told him to send me a Please Call Me when I knocked off so that I could send him airtime,” Thabo said.
He said his brother didn’t contact him again, but he never suspected that anything was wrong.
Then at about 7pm he received a call from a prison warden telling him that Karabelo wanted them to deliver a message to him.
“Two female prison warders came to my house the same night,” he said.
“They told me that he was stabbed and killed by two inmates, his two friends!”
Thabo said he was looking forward to seeing Karabelo again.
“My brother wanted to start a new life. I bought him a new stand in Soshanguve and a fridge to contribute to his new life,” said Thabo.
He said Karabelo managed to identify his attackers before he died.
Police spokesman Constable Herman Moremi said the two suspects appeared briefly in the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrates Court.
