FOR every woman who leaves an abusive relationship, many more choose to stay.
Zodwa Chulu (38) from Tsakane in Ekurhuleni used to endure abuse, hoping it would somehow change.
But now she has come forward to tell her tale and to urge others in the same boat to jump ship before it is too late!
“All the signs were there, but I was blinded by love and nearly paid with my life!” Zodwa told the People’s Paper.
She said she had lived with her alleged abusive husband for more than 20 years.
“I finally decided enough was enough when he fetched me from my friend’s place to try and kill me in the bush far from home.
“Fortunately cops came to my rescue and immediately arrested him,” claimed Zodwa.
She claims that her husband did not allow her to have any friends and her family was not welcome in her home.
“We got married when I was only 19 years old. As the years went by he became more of a monster.”
Zodwa said her friends tried to convince her that she was in an abusive relationship, but her husband would always tell her they were jealous of what she had.
“I’d forgive him even though I’d wake up in hospital every time he beat me up.
“Never again! I put up with his Casanova ways and his abuse, all in the name of building a home for my children. Not once has he even apologised to me”
She said the situation got worse when Sello turned his abuse to his children, allegedly assaulting his son Phumlane (19) and breaking his laptop and phone in the process.
“I could no longer watch him abuse my mum. She built a home for us on her own and took good care of my father when he was unemployed. She deserves better,” said Phumlane.
Zodwa said she filed for divorce and wants nothing more to do with him.
When Daily Sun contacted, her husband said: “Zodwa cheated on me on several occasions and I forgave her. Now she claims that I am abusing her. She just wants to carry on with her lover without being bothered by me. It’s fine. She can go.”
