IT WAS already late at night when the sangoma rolled the bones and said Nandos had taken the money.
Daily Sun was there when Nandos burst into tears and told his friends the bones were lying.
BUT THE NEXT MORNING HE WAS BACK, SHAME ON HIS FACE AND MONEY IN HIS HAND.
Nandos Mchebe (20) confessed to his brothers that he stole for love.
He said he was taking strain from his bride-to-be in Mozambique to get married in December. So big was the pressure that he even decided to steal from his friends.
Nandos explained that since the beginning of the year, he has been watching his brother-in-law, Freddy Simango (41) saving money from selling cosmetics door-to-door.
Nandos tried the same work but was not nearly as successful. He knew Freddy and his friends, Maristeta Maphosa (30), Zakes Sithole (29) and Zacharia Mashaba (41) had a lot of money in the house and on Wednesday when they left for work, he stayed behind.
When Freddy and the others came home that afternoon, Freddy’s R14 000 was missing and so was R8 000 belonging to Maristeta.
They called their landlord and the clever old woman came up with a plan.
She called Daily Sun and took the friends to sangoma Doris Mathibe, who rolled her bones. The bones pointed at Nandos as the culprit – but Nandos was too chicken to confess. She even gave him
something to drink but he still denied being responsible for the theft.
When they left, the sangoma gave Freddy and his friends some muthi to drink.
And then, as the sun was rising, the friends were back at Doris’ place.
Nandos, they said, had confessed and returned R17 600 of the stolen money.
Later that morning he returned the rest of the money (R2 400) and everybody is happy again.
Freddy said he was not going to lay charges against his brother-in-law.
“He will have to pay the sangoma’s debt and we will deal with him when we go back home,” he said.
