THE conman phoned loyal SunReader Efenia Khumalo (51) to tell her she had won the Daily Sun grocery competition.
An excited Efenia from Nellmapius ext 1 near Mamelodi in Tshwane was at work when she received the good news.
But then the man, who identified himself as John Majola, made a big mistake by telling Efenia she had to pay him R1 000 to get her vouchers!
Efenia told Daily Sun that at first she was overwhelmed, thinking of the R2 500 worth of grocery vouchers she had apparently won.
“I asked the man how I was going to get the vouchers and he said that he would SMS me a reference number.
“Then he said I had to send him R1 000 via Shoprite Money Market to be able to redeem the vouchers.
“I told him I would send the money the following day because I was still at work, but he insisted I send someone to deposit the cash. I immediately became suspicious,” she said.
Efenia said she had seen Daily Sun grocery voucher winners with their branded caps and T-shirts in the People’s Paper, and told “John” she wanted hers as well.
“I called my friends and told them I had won grocery vouchers, but when I told them about the R1 000 they shared my suspicions and told me to contact Daily Sun,” she said.
Efenia was disappointed to find out the man was trying to cheat her out of her money.
Daily Sun always sends a SunTeam to the grocery winner’s house to deliver the vouchers as well as a branded cap and T-shirt at no cost to the winner whatsoever.
The SunTeam will also interview and take photos of the lucky grocery winner.
When Daily Sun phoned John Majola and asked him about the grocery vouchers, he hung up his phone.
