MOTORISTS got a huge fright when they almost drove into a burning truck yesterday morning.
The truck carrying cardboard had burst into flames on the N2.
The incident happened near the eThekwini Hospital and Heart Centre in Durban.
Cops closed the highway for hours while firefighters battled to get the blaze under control.
It is not clear what caused the fire but other drivers suspect mechanical failure as the truck was not involved in an accident with other
vehicles.
The driver managed to escape unharmed and was seen walking up and down at the scene as if in a daze. He refused to speak to the media.
Sphamandla Mhlongo, a motorist who had stopped to help, said the truck driver was lucky to be alive.
“The man must thank God that he wasn’t hurt or killed,” said Sphamandla.
On Wednesday a truck carrying toilet paper, paint and plastic material collided with a bakkie and a car.
The truck overturned on Umgeni Road and caught fire.
Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said three people were seriously injured.
“Paramedics treated the injured at the scene before they were taken to hospital,” said Botha.
It took about four hours to put out the fire and to remove the paint that had spilled across the highway.
KZN police spokesman Major Thulani Zwane said New-lands East police attended the accident but no case was opened.
“The cause of the fire is still unknown,” said Zwane.
