THE Joburg Roads Agency has announced that the construction of the M1 highway’s Oxford and Federation bridges is set to enter its final stage.
The head of infrastructure development, Mpho Kau, said: “When we started this project last year in November, we indicated that the project would be over by now. But we experienced some complications.”
He said the project should be completed by the end of June.
“Traffic will soon be switched from the northbound lanes to the southbound lanes so that work on the other side can start.
“About 75% of the construction has been done. The remaining 25% of the work will be done on the northbound carriageway,” said Kau.
He said there will be new traffic implications for road users.
Member of the mayoral committee for transport, Councillor Nonhlanhla Makhuba, said the project is very important.
“Road safety will be enhanced and there will be improved mobility in Joburg for pupils, workers and taxi drivers who use this highway.
“About 80 000 vehicles travel on the M1 daily,” said Makhuba.
