ANGRY residents have taken to the streets again, saying they will not be sidelined by government.
The people of blocks H and F of Soshanguve, north of Tshwane, blocked the roads leading to the municipal offices yesterday.
A resident said they would not allow the municipality to dodge them. They were furious over the high rates they are being made to pay.
Tshwane officials addressed residents on Tuesday and promised to give them feedback in seven days.
Residents started protesting over the weekend, complaining they were charged unreasonably high rates for services.
Residents told Daily Sun they had a meeting on Wednesday. “A municipal official came with police and told us the matter was not their problem but the councillor’s, who they refused to call for some reason.”
The people said they blamed the councillor and also the municipality.
Municipal workers were not able to get to work yesterday and Tshwane Metro cops were at the scene.
The City of Tshwane’s Blessing Manale this week said affected residents should not organise violent protests but take their bills to their nearest municipal office to sort the problem out.
“We reaffirm our commitment to addressing the plight of low-income households by offering them extra rebates on water, electricity and waste collection rates.
“We would also like to call on residents to give the necessary input during budget hearings to ensure their views are heard,” he said.
