CHRISTMAS arrived early for the residents of rural Hibberdene near Port Shepstone on the south coast of KZN.
That’s because a truck full of frozen chicken overturned on the N2 on-ramp to Durban at about 6am.
Instead of helping the injured driver, residents helped themselves to the cargo.
A motorist, who was stuck in traffic during the accident, told Daily Sun that the residents were all over the N2 helping themselves to frozen chicken.
“Some of them forcefully opened the truck and started taking the chicken. They fled the scene on foot when police arrived,” he said.
KwaZulu Private Ambulance spokeswoman Belinda Catchpole said although she was not at the scene she was aware of the incident.
“The driver of the truck had minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital,” said Catchpole.
KZN spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane confirmed the accident as well as the looting.
“It is alleged that at about 6am a driver of a truck, loaded with chicken, lost control of the vehicle at the on-ramp to Durban at Hibberdene.
Zwane said Hibberdene police, Port Shepstone K9 unit and the Public Order Policing members responded to the incident and the culprits ran away.
An accident report was opened at the Hibberdene Police Station.
