FURIOUS residents protested for a second day today against being evicted from their homes.

The Red Ants, dressed in their red overalls, started demolishing the residents' shacks on the dusty plain known as Kanana Extension in Hammanskraal, Tshwane yesterday.

The City of Tshwane has a court order to evict them from municipal land.

This sparked violent protests, with roads blocked with burning tyres and rocks. Several vehicles were burnt and stones and petrol bombs were thrown at the Red Ants.

Two members of the Red Ants were killed during yesterday’s chaos. There were also a number of serious injuries.

This morning, black smoke was billowing over the area with protesters standing at most street corners. Schoolkids in the area had to walk to school as cars and taxis were being turned away from Harry Gwala road.

Residents said they would only stop protesting if Gauteng Premier David Makhura or Tshwane Mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa came to address them. Gauteng cop spokesman Captain Tsekiso Mofokeng said five people were arrested last night. They had been charged with public violence and damaging property.
