GOGO Anna Morema has not only had access to her father’s grave limited, but the school that has fenced it in intends to use the ground it is on as a sports ground!
The 85-year-old now believes the grave will be removed without her being notified or asked for permission.
Gogo Anna from Suncity near KwaMhlanga in Mpumalanga, said the school must look for another place for a sports ground.
“The grave has been there for more than 50 years. The school was only built in 1990,” she said. “My father was a farm worker here and we occupied the land because of our labour tenant status. My father will no longer rest in peace. This place belongs to our forefathers and I was born and raised here.”
Gogo Anna said she will do anything to protect the grave, and wanted the school to remove the fence. She said her family had always visited the grave at will, but now have to seek permission.
Induna Mkhuphathuli Mabena (50) said what the school had done was unfair.
“The grave was there before I was even born,” he said. “There are many other graves on the land. The school will have to leave the people in peace.
“We gave the school a big piece of land for their sports ground. I don’t understand why they fenced around that piece of land because it doesn’t belong to them.”
Silamba Secondary School SGB chairman Sello Makena said the ground was allocated to the school a long time ago.
He said he knows nothing about the graves on the land.
