THE gogo was lucky to survive when the huge tree crashed to the ground but now she’s homeless and hopeless!
Susan Moacwi (61), from Mohlakeng near Randfontein, was folding her washing while sitting on her bed on Friday afternoon when she heard a loud crack.
“At first, I took no notice of the sound and thought branches were just brushing against the shack, but suddenly a tree just metres from my doorstep came crashing down,” she said.
The branches of the tree which was being lashed by strong wind destroyed the back of Susan’s mkhukhu and the bed she shared with her husband and four grandchildren.
The gogo looked gloomily at what remained of her shack as she told the SunTeam how community members and firefighters rushed to the scene to help her.
“I’m happy the kids were at school but I don’t know where we’ll sleep. If our councillor had given the houses she promised us I wouldn’t be in this situation,” she said.
“The councillor knows about the tree and our housing situation. She keeps telling me I’m on the list.”
Pontsho Moleko (34), Susan’s neighbour, also blamed the councillor for what happened.
“If we were given the houses promised by the councillor the tree wouldn’t have damaged anyone’s shack.”
Councillor Dora Mogale denied the allegations.
“They didn’t report the tree. That tree is old and nobody was promised a house. However, there are houses being built and people will be moved there.
“Everything has been sorted out,” she said.
