ON WEEKENDS, young girls in Kagiso, Mogale City, gather to play diketo – a traditional game using small stones or marbles and one big stone.

But among these youngsters you will also find gogo Christinah Mogapi (65).

That’s because she’s the one teaching them the finer skills of this ancient game, while also giving them a run for their money!

Gogo Christinah is the champ when it comes to playing diketo.

The players each bet R2 and they play as many rounds as they can.

In the end the winner takes all – and that winner is just about always gogo Christinah.

“I often come here to share in the game with these young girls and they love it.

“I’ve been playing diketo since I was a teenager. Since I had nothing to do, I decided to come and teach them a skill or two to use in the game,” she said.

“This game brings joy and peace, and kids are always ready to learn.”

  • Diketo is a game in which each player gets 10 small stones or marbles and one big stone. A small hole of about five centimetres deep is dug in the ground, where the small stones are placed.

Only two players can play at a time.
