THE sweet gogo always carries a Bible.
Although she is old and frail, she has allegedly managed to trick five couples by selling them the same RDP house.
Humphrey Ngobeni (36) and his wife, Lerato Phaswane (24), thought their ancestors had finally answered their prayers when they were offered an RDP house in Nellmapius, east of Tshwane, last year.
The couple had no reason to fear being scammed.
After all the seller was a frail gogo who could barely walk.
Humphrey said when they first met the 71-year-old gogo from Mamelodi East in Tshwane, she seemed kind.
He claimed they paid R195 000 for the house in April last year. “The gogo told us to deposit R80 000 into her account and transfer the remaining money to her agents,” he claimed.
Lerato said six months after moving in, they received a shocking visit from an unknown couple who claimed to have bought the house.
“They told us we had to move out.
“We refused,” she said.
Weeks later, they started to receive calls from three different couples, claiming to have bought the house.
“We asked the gogo about the claims but she denied them,” she said.
Lerato said that one day they found all their windows smashed.
“We realised we were not safe and had to move out.”
It appears the transfer of ownership was never done.
And now a man who claims he bought the house from an agent lives there.
The man said: “When I bought the house the agent showed me a title deed which was in the gogo;s name. If they sold it to more than one person, they should deal with the gogo and not me.”
When the SunTeam visited the gogo on Monday, she said she only sold the house to Humphrey and his wife.
City spokesman Lindela Mashigo advised the couple to open a case against the gogo.
