AT NIGHT the sound of heavy rain falling like a thunderstorm comes from inside a house not far from the cop shop.
But outside and on the street it is as dry as a bone.
Some residents and passersby say the deserted house in Davis Street in Westonaria, west of Joburg, is haunted by a ghost . . .
And the ghost has earned the name Suzy!
One passer-by, Piet Letheko (38), said: “The sound starts like sssss and continues like uuuuu and zzzziii.”
Police are apparently avoiding patrolling the street in order to steer clear of the ghost house.
Some say Suzy sounds like a snake.
Rumours are also doing the rounds that some residents were seen running out of the house screaming, on their way to the cop shop.
Piet said: “When we tried to stand and listen to the sounds of rain Suzy made, a heavy thunderclap sound hit and made us all jump.”
Some people insist they still hear the hissing sound of a snake. On Friday Daily Sun found the ghost house guarded by two security guards, who declined to talk to the People’s Paper.
All they kept saying was: “No, we are not allowed to talk to the newspaper. We are in fear.”
Asked whether they were in fear of Suzy, they answered: “Not Suzy, but protocol. We are not allowed to talk to the media. Go to the Westonaria Police Station,” said one guard.
Westonaria police spokesman Warrant Officer Raymond Sebonyane said: “There was a rumour that a snake was inside the house, but when we went there we could not find anything.”
He said the house used to be owned by the police but it is now the property of the public works department.
“It was one of the houses used by married couples. A police officer died there a long time ago.”
