ANGRY residents closed Jonga Street with big rocks on Friday.
The people of Phahameng in Mangaung demanded that speed humps be erected to prevent crashes.
This followed an incident in which a speeding car killed a woman last week.
Residents claimed a number of people had died on the road, especially kids.
Buyiswa Songa (38) told Daily Sun: “We demand speed bumps because speeding drivers kill people.
“Last week, my friend was killed on this road. Earlier this year, five kids were killed by speeding drivers.
“We spoke to our councillor last week and she promised that speed humps would soon be erected.”
But nothing happened, so they closed the road, which had been turned into a race track by some motorists.
“We’ll never allow that. Our kids are dying because of reckless drivers,” said Buyiswa.
“What’s even worse is that the road is near a school. Pupils are not safe at all. Enough is enough!”
Councillor Manana Chaka said: “I met with the residents and I promised them that speed humps would be erected.
“I submitted the forms to the city manager and the roads and transport department.
“I’m just waiting to hear from the concerned officials.”
Mangaung municipal spokesman Qondile Khedama told the People’s Paper: “We’re urging the residents to calm down.”
Khedama said the matter was receiving management’s attention.
