EVERYONE knew the funeral would be monitored by the cops and there would be hundreds of mourners – but no one expected the chaos that erupted.
Members of the public looked on in horror on Saturday as gang members overloaded the only bus at the funeral of one of their colleagues and almost destroyed it.
Members of the Xs gang stood on top of a moving bus and sang their hearts out. By the time the bus got to Jacobskop Cemetery, just outside De Deur in the Vaal, all its windows were gone!
The funeral was for Vusi Nyembe (25), who was killed two weeks ago in a gang war between the Xs and a rival gang known as the Guptas.
Vusi’s grieving mum, Elleen Mkhwanazi (50), and other family members quietly listened as speakers in the funeral tent offered their condolences.
But when they arrived at the cemetery, the Xs took over, singing initiation songs and jumping around the grave.
As Vusi’s coffin was lowered into the ground one member of the Xs said: “Your death was not in vain. We want you to know we will avenge your death.” Everyone stood back and allowed the gang members to perform their rituals.
As mourners made their way back to the family home for lunch, eight cop cars escorted the bus to ensure no violence broke out.
Seven suspects were charged with Vusi’s murder and appeared in the Sebokeng Magistrates Court last week.
