THE two determined women wake up at the crack of dawn every day to prepare Imiqolo (fish bones) and fish which are in demand ekasi!
Ntombekhaya Ntamo (41) and Thandi Williams (28) from KwaLanga kasi in Uitenhage often sit around a fire in a street corner, frying Imiqolo and fish which are sold at low prices.
The two women, who have received overwhelming support from customers, both have a passion for business.
Their successful business was founded by Ntombekhaya.
She said: “I started it in May this year. When there are problems like power outages ekasi, people stream into our shack as if it is a voting station!
“They know that when darkness hits the township the only people to approach for ready meals are us.”
She said Imiqolo, which always sell quickly, are the kasi’s favourite food.
“My frying pan takes at least 13 Imiqolo per frying session while I put nine pieces of fish per round.”
She said when the queue is very long her focus is on frying while her assistant, Thandi, wraps the food and serves their customers.
“We always arrive promptly at 12 noon every day. Despite the challenge of different weather conditions which can be unpredictable, people still stand toe-to-toe to buy.
“They wait patiently in line, striking up conversations as we gradually warm the oil.”
Thandi said: “Business will always be smooth sailing if you have a passion for it. We both love this business. Our customers include teachers, firefighters, buildersa and residents of all ages.”
“Our wish is to get a container and also sell chicken, chops, amagwinya, polony and sweets,” said Ntombekhaya.
Customer Sikelwelwa Haas (22) said: “Their Imiqolo are delicious, fresh and crispy. They trend in all seasons!”
