An unemployed woman (30) was able to convince others that she had a job and could also get them work.
She appeared in the KwaNobuhle Magistrates Court yesterday for selling fong kong jobs.
She allegedly defrauded more than 30 people, saying she would find them work.
She handed herself over to cops after her victims exposed her on Facebook.
The accused, from Khayelitsha in Uitenhage, promised many people jobs and apparently took their money.
She charged between R700 to R1 500 from each person.
She promised them jobs as welders, cleaners, plumbers and general workers at Transnet.
She faces 23 counts of theft under false pretences with a possibility of additional counts at a later stage.
Victim Welekazi Konzani (32) said she was robbed of R1 000.
“The woman told me she worked at the company and that she needed cold drink money, which was R1 000,” said Welekazi.
“We met another woman who had already paid her R1 000.
“Then she said she needed copies of our IDs and tax numbers and we’d get a call to come for training and should bring our CVs. She said she would phone her colleague in front of us to prove that she wasn’t lying.
“We were then convinced that she wasn’t lying.
“When we reported her to her mother, she said we were the third group to be crooked by her daughter.”
Police spokesman Sergeant Majola Nkohli denied Facebook claims that the woman had been arrested at the airport while trying to flee.
“She handed herself over to police,” said Nkohli.
“We suspect there might be more than R50 000 involved that she allegedly took from people.”
The case was postponed to next Tuesday for a bail application.
