A 52-year-old police officer was shot and killed while attending to a burglary in Ritavi in the early hours of the morning, Limpopo police said.

Warrant officer Jan Homu was shot while searching for the suspects, Colonel Ronel Otto said.

"He was shot once in the right hip. He died at the scene while a paramedic was working on him," she said. His colleague was unharmed.

The suspects fled the scene with two TVs and clothing.

Otto said a task team had been established to search for them.

Limpopo police commissioner Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba sent condolences to Homu's family.

He vowed that police would use every resource available to track down the suspects and arrest them, and urged anyone with information to come forward.
