Police found illegal firearms and live rounds of ammunition in Ndwedwe.

SIX illegal firearms, including shotguns, 303 rifles and handguns were found hidden in a rondavel in Ndwedwe, north of KZN.

Live rounds of ammunition were also found in the house.

A 60-year-old man who was found in the house was arrested after he failed to give a satisfactory explanation to the police.

The joint operation by various police units was conducted at Ndwedwe on Wednesday after cops received a tip-off about illegal firearms and ammunition.

KZN police spokeswoman Captain Nqobile Gwala said the cops followed up the information which led them to a house in the Gonothini area ofNdwedwe.

“On arrival, members searched a homestead which was identified to them as the place where firearms were kept. A total of six unlicensed firearms, including handguns, shotguns and 303 rifles were found in a rondavel.”

She said all these recovered firearms will be sent for ballistic tests to establish if they had been used in any crimes.

KZN provincial commissioner, Major-General Bheki Langa, praised the members for their excellent work that led to the recovery of such firearms.

“By recovering such firearms, we have saved many people that could have been attacked by the criminals using these firearms.

“I also thank members of the community who reported these firearms to the police. Your continuous support in fighting crime is highly appreciated,” he said.
