THE gatvol residents of Langa kasi say the City of Cape Town breaks its promises.
They claim the city has failed to provide them with building materials after a fire destroyed their shacks last Monday.
Community leader Michael Ngqunge told Daily Sun: “We have been sleeping outside under the stars for six days now because we didn’t get our building materials from the City of Cape Town.”
He said the authorities are now singing a different tune.
“They say we should move to a temporary location somewhere in Delft.
“They want to start a housing project in the area,” he said.
“This is impossible. Schools will reopen tomorrow. Where will our children study?”
Residents say the City is letting them down.
“We lost absolutely everything.
“Going a week without food is a nightmare. We are being neglected,” added Michael.
“They lied to us. We are not going anywhere. We will resist any attempt by the city to remove us.”
Residents said the community hall available in zone 29 does not have electricity.
“The Gugasthebe is locked and we could not gain entry. We have ran out of options,” said Michael.
Informal settlements mayoral committee member Xanthea Limberg said: “The City has been in the area to assist with disaster relief efforts.”
