WHENEVER Phindile Sithole wears her Carvela shoes she remembers her husband, Philani Ngcobo.
This is because the shoes were the last present he bought her on the day he died!
The 29-year-old woman from Mofolo in Soweto said before Philani (35) left for work last Monday, he took her and their one-year-old child to the mall ekasi to spoil them.
However, her happiness was soon cut short. He dropped her off at home and left to work at his bakkie hire business, only to be killed shortly after.
“He was hired by some guy to move his shack. When he left he said he would come back home soon,” she said.
But at about 6pm she heard shots outside and when she went outside, she saw Philani lying on the ground.
“I rushed to him and as I came closer he said, ‘My wife, they are killing me for nothing’. A cop then appeared and threatened to shoot me if I came any closer to my husband,” she said.
“When I turned back I heard another gunshot. The cop had shot my husband in the head.”
A witness said:
“I couldn’t hear what he was saying but it looked like he was pleading with the police not to kill him.”
Philani’s friend, Themba Tsotetsi (33) said the cops had followed him after he bought food. “They didn’t stop him but opened fire the minute he stopped his car to drop off a friend who lives near his house.”
Robbie Raburabu, spokesman for the Independent Police Investigative Directorate, said they were investigating a murder case but no arrests had been made.
