RESIDENTS of Zululiyaduma Village, KwaYanguye in northern KZN, are still struggling to come to terms with the killing of three people in their homestead.
Maureen Mabizela (49), her daughter Sqothu Mhlongo (27) and son Lucky Mhlongo (23) were shot and hacked to death on Thursday. The other daughter, Nomkhosi Mhlongo (30) is said to be fighting for her life in hospital. Maureen, known as MaNcanana to her neighbours, was a shop owner who arrived in the area three years ago. It is believed their killers stole money and a number of items from the shop.
Captain Nqobile Gwala said four suspects aged between 16 and 21 were arrested on Friday. She said the suspects will appear today in the Melmoth Magistrates Court.
They will face three counts of murder and one attempted murder.
Inkosi Velemandleni Biyela’s spokesman, Siphosenkosi Biyela (56), said: “We heard that four young men were arrested. Our concern is that their families should also not have been left behind.
“It is highly possible they knew about the plot to kill MaNcanana and her children.”
He said the suspects’ families must have seen the items stolen from the shop.
“When an unemployed child returns home with valuable items at night and keeps them in your house, you should ask where he got them.”
