SEVEN families were left stranded after an eight-roomed house was burnt to ashes.
The house in Vuka, Sharpeville, Vaal, is owned by Sello Qcina who rented a room to each of seven families.
The families were at church and work on Sunday when smoke was seen rising into the sky.
Some residents tried to help put out the fires but the flames were too strong.
The families returned home to find their belongings were totally destroyed.
Several fire officials were at the scene trying to stop the fire. More trucks were called for support as the fire got worse but they could not put out the flames.
Qcina told Daily Sun thatthe losses caused by the fire were shocking.
“Everything, including important valuables, for everyone living in this house was destroyed in the fire,” he said.
“There was no one in the house and neighbours called us to tell us the house was burning. We don’t know what caused the fire.
“We would be very happy if anybody out there could help us with food and useful items.”
The families were offered sleeping places by neighbours for the night.
Jimmy Rakaki, ward councillor in the area, called for the community to help the families.
“If anyone can help in any way that would be great. These families have lost all their valuables, including their IDs,” he said.
Police spokesman Captain Attie Loate said no case was opened at the Sharpeville cop shop.
