THE car dealers were excited when two innocent looking men came into their dealership to ask about a vehicle.
The two were neatly dressed and asked to test drive a car.
However, they drove off while the salesman was still talking on the phone.
People at the Auto Car dealership in Durban North were left shocked after the incident on Monday. They immediately contacted the cops and the tracker company.
Salesman Mike Abrahams (58) said the two men are believed to be in their 20s.
He said they were wearing smart silver- grey trousers, with nice shirts.
“One came into the dealership, pretending to be a customer wanting to buy the red Golf GTI. He said his name was Justin and while I was talking to him, my phone rang. The caller said he was Justin’s dad and he asked me to switch on the engine as he wanted to hear the sound of the car. But Justin drove off,” said Mike.
He said his friend was not with him at the time. “I suspect he was the one who called me, pretending to be the father.”
Michael McManus, owner of the dealership, said: “Unfortunately, these criminals were not caught on CCTV footage as the cameras were not working at the time of the incident.”
Major Thulani Zwane said Greenwood cops are investigating a case of theft of a motor vehicle.
“The vehicle was recovered at Newlands East. No arrests have been at this stage,” said Zwane.
Michael confirmed that the car was recovered. But he said he didn’t know the state of the car as he was not there when the police found it.
