WHEN a young CPF member saw three men running away from cops, he tried to help.

But instead of thanking him, the cops slapped him around.

Mhlengi Shinga (24) from Umlazi, south of Durban said he is angry that police beat him for nothing.

He said he didn’t have physical bruises, but his heart was bleeding after being harassed by people who were supposed to protect him.

“I want these cops to pay for what they did to me,” said Mhlengi.

“They made me feel like a criminal.”

Now he’s not sure if he wants to continue the fight against crime.

He said as a CPF member he often helps police.

That’s why he tried to help them catch the three suspects without asking what crime they had committed.

“I was coming from the gym on Monday when I saw three young men running from the cops,” he said.

While he was running after the suspects, a double-cab bakkie with three cops in it stopped next to him.

He said two cops got out and allegedly gave him hot klaps.

Major Thulani Zwane said a case of common assault was opened but no arrest has been made.
