WHAT was supposed to be a peaceful gathering to elect a new ward committee ended in a brutal beating on Saturday.
Beauty Maisela (29) of Phatantswane Village, outside Jane Furse in Limpopo, claims she was beaten with a belt, broom and stones in front of residents by an ANC councillor.
A furious Beauty told the SunTeam her attacker hit her with everything he could lay his hands on and she later woke up in hospital.
“I’ve never had a problem with him. I’m shocked by this. I’m not even a member of a political party. He can’t go around hitting women. What kind of example is he setting?” she asked.
Beauty said she now lives in fear as she had a late night visit from ANC members who told her that they would deal with her if the councillor was arrested. A resident said the trouble started when Beauty was nominated for the committee and the councillor got angry because he wanted his friends to be chosen.
Beauty’s brother, Simon Maisela (36) said: “After we voted for his party, this is how they thank us.”
Police spokeswoman Constable Magdalene Malatji confirmed the incident.
“We have arrested the 47-year-old councillor. He appeared in the Nebo Magistrates Court on Monday and he was released on R500 bail. Investigations continue,” she said.
Sekhukhune ANC secretary Jerry Maseko said they would wait for the court to rule before taking action.
“We are aware of the matter, but he must defend himself in court. We are also investigating and if he’s guilty, we will take strong action,” he said.
