Cops investigate bribe allegations!

accreditation

THE tsotsi cop who was caught on video asking a Zimbabwean driver for a R1 000 bribe in Durban will soon face the music.

Yesterday Maydon Wharf station commander Colonel Simon Matlou told Daily Sun they have launched an internal investigation into the allegations.

The foreign drivers had complained about being targeted by some cops from Maydon Wharf Police Station.

They complained about a group of cops who allegedly charge them R1 000 bribes if their work permits had expired.

Matlou commended the People’s Paper for publishing the story of the tsotsi cop on Monday.

He said he was unaware of some of his cops’ behaviour.

“We are now in possession of the video and we have watched it.

“We have launched an internal investigation into the matter.

“We have our own specialist people analysing the video.

“I can assure you that a file has been opened into the matter,” said the top cop at the station.

On the video the tsotsi cop shakes his baton and warns the driver to pay the money or go to the cells.

He tells the driver: “I look after most of the guys and they look after me.” And then he warns: “I don’t like somebody who is lying. I get angry.”

A brave driver who sent the video said nobody reports these cops because they don’t want to risk their lives.

“We’ve even named them.

“We call them High Rates because they demand R1 000 or more. If you don’t have money, you are forced to go back to your country,” he said.

He alleged that the cops who usually
patrol at Kings Rest Container Park in Bayhead and around the Durban Harbour make about R15 000 a day from the bribes the drivers pay.

Matlou urged the victims of the tsotsi cops to come forward with further evidence.
